About Us

Preserving family history, one tape at a time

Daily Pixel Box is a Tokyo studio dedicated to videotape digitization, photo scanning, and family archive organizing.

Since 2011

Origins in Nihonbashi

Daily Pixel Box began in a small Nihonbashi office with a single VHS deck and a shared belief that too many family memories were quietly decaying in storage boxes across Tokyo. The first projects were small — a neighbor's wedding tapes, a coworker's box of slides — but the pattern was always the same: relief, then gratitude, once footage everyone assumed was lost turned out to still be recoverable.

Over fifteen years, that single deck grew into a full studio equipped to handle nearly every consumer tape and film format sold in Japan since the 1970s. What hasn't changed is the hands-on approach: every order is still inspected personally before a single frame is captured.

What We Believe

What guides how we handle your archive

Digitizing someone's family history is not the same as any other data job — the originals are often irreplaceable, and the people trusting us with them are usually thinking about a parent, a grandparent, or a childhood they want to hold onto. That responsibility shapes every decision we make in the studio.

  • Originals come first. Nothing is discarded, altered, or kept without explicit permission — physical media is always the priority, not just the digital copy.
  • Transparency over convenience. You see an itemized quote before work starts, and we call before doing anything outside that quote.
  • No shortcuts on quality. Frame-by-frame capture and archival scanning take longer than quick alternatives, but we've never found a faster method we'd trust with someone's wedding video.
  • Privacy by default. Your footage and photos are never viewed for any reason beyond quality checks required to complete your order.

How We Work

A process built around fragile, one-of-a-kind media

Because so much of what arrives at our studio cannot be replaced, our process leans toward caution at every stage rather than speed. Each of the four stages below happens for every order, regardless of size.

Intake & inspection

Every item is logged, numbered, and checked for damage before it goes anywhere near our equipment.

Careful capture

Tapes and film are digitized frame-by-frame on maintained, purpose-built equipment, not consumer shortcuts.

Review & organize

Files are checked for quality issues, then renamed and sorted into your family's own timeline.

Deliver & back up

Your archive is delivered exactly as requested, with a temporary backup kept in case anything needs resending.

Milestones

Fifteen years of small, deliberate growth

We've expanded slowly and only when it served the work — adding a format, a resolution, or a backup method only once we were confident we could do it to the same standard as everything else.

  • 2011

Studio opens in Nihonbashi with a single VHS deck and a handful of local clients.

  • 2014

Added Super 8 and 8mm film scanning after repeated requests from families with older home movies.

  • 2017

Upgraded to 4K frame-by-frame film capture and archival-grade photo and negative scanning.

  • 2020

Introduced private cloud delivery and a redundant, off-site backup step for every finished archive.

  • 2023

Passed fifty thousand digitized photographs and ten thousand digitized tapes and reels.

  • 2026

Fifteen years in, still the same studio, still personally inspecting every item that comes through the door.

What We're Equipped For

Format expertise most shops no longer keep

Many photo shops stopped servicing tape formats years ago as demand dropped, which is exactly why we kept investing in them. Our studio maintains working decks, telecine equipment, and archival scanners across formats other studios have already retired.

VHS, VHS-C, Betamax, Video8, Hi8, MiniDV
8mm and Super 8 home movie film
Prints, slides, and negatives, any decade
4K scanning and redundant digital storage
Why Families Trust Us

Fifteen years, one studio, thousands of archives

From our studio at 2-20-11 Higashishinmachi, Itabashi-ku, we've digitized tens of thousands of photographs and thousands of videotapes for local Tokyo families, many of whom return years later with a new box discovered in a parent's closet. Every original is logged, handled with gloves, and returned exactly as it arrived — because the goal has never been just files, it's peace of mind.
